Matthew 6:7–15
Jesus said, “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“Pray then in this way:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Reflection by Rev. Melody Rockwell

“Jesus said, “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases… for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” -- Matthew 6:7-8
The practice of prayer can be daunting, if our view of God is such that we feel compelled to pray only when we can do so perfectly with a flair of religiosity. Jesus offers comforting words, in essence, telling us to keep it simple. It’s not the words you pray that are important. God knows what is in your heart, what your needs are.
For me, it is blessed assurance to know that at times, no words are needed when I pray. Quiet, open listening for the wisdom and guidance of God most certainly trumps verbose, prayerful pleas. Yet, there are times when honest, forthright conversation with God is exactly what I need… especially when I am experiencing anger, despair or grief. I have learned, too, that prayer can occur in an everyday way… while I’m peeling potatoes, commuting, waiting for a meeting to begin… or end.
In whatever way we pray, let it be direct and unpretentious. We can trust in the steadfast love of God, a God whom Jesus tells us is our “Abba” – our Papa – a compassionate, approachable presence with whom we can nurture a loving relationship through prayer.
