Notes from the Office

We rejoice with Amanda Smith (granddaughter of Mary Smith) and Scott Freeman on their September 4th wedding at Christ Church.

Committee Leaders: You are asked to advise your Commissioner and the parish office of any special events that need Calendaring for the remainder of 2010 and through next September (2011). You’re also asked to report any special fundraising your group is considering. You don’t need to give specific dates or details — the goal is to give the whole parish a basic picture of what to expect at Christ Church, so they can plan ahead to attend events of interest and to consider their extra-budgetary giving. Don’t know who your Commissioner is? Please phone the office (363-2029). Also, if you did not receive from your Vestry Liaison a request to fill out a committee census, please phone the office for details.

What's Happening at Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry

A new pantry Executive Director is sought for this ministry we share with Westminster Presbyterian. This job is highly rewarding, but requires commitment: ordering food from HACAP once a month, arranging for its pickup, and overseeing the pantry. If you are looking for a way to make a major difference in the community, this is an opportunity for you.

The L&F Kid’s Closet needs back to school clothing (especially jeans). Clean, gently used or new clothes, sizes infant to 16 may be put in the hamper near the elevator. If you’d like to shop for boys and girls underwear and socks that is always appreciated. Thank you for the donations that have been received already.

In July, we served 432 households, with a total of 1,098 people. Of these, 352 are children and 746 are adults.

September’s Shopping List: canned beef stew, canned pineapple. Please place these requested items into the basket when you come to church this weekend. Thank you for picking up extras this week! Your money gifts are also greatly appreciated. Please put "food pantry" on the memo line before dropping your check into the regular offering plate.

Calendar Items

These items (and the Happening This Week section) are submitted by committee leaders to highlight upcoming events. Please see our Calendar page for all events at Christ Church. Don’t know who to talk to for more information about an event? Just call the parish office (363-2029).

Buildings and Grounds Work Day, 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 11. All are welcome to help.

An Autumn Potluck is the theme as we resume our second Saturday potluck suppers on Sept. 11. Plan to join your host, Janet Leary, in the parlor following the 5:30 worship service. Please sign up in the narthex so we can save you a place at the table. All are welcome!

Art Exhibit: Ida Martin Sorensen and Emily Martin Sorensen will be having an art exhibit at Mercy Medical Center from September 7 - October 5. Ida does calligraphic artwork and Emily does abstract painting.

Interested in deepening your understanding and practice in pastoral and healing ministries? Come to the Pastoral Resource Group on September 20, 7 p.m. in the Schultz Chapel for prayer, learning, laughter, reflection and a special treat: Deacon Mark Eccles will be sharing insights on self-care for those providing pastoral care for others.

St. Luke's Hospital Spiritual Care Department is again offering the Spiritual Companioning class starting Tuesday evening, October 5, through November 16; every Tuesday evening 6– 9 p.m. Several people from Christ Church have been through this course and some continue to be “on call chaplains” at the hospital. If you are interested in more information please call Linda Swanson directly at 369-7211.

From the Pastor's Study: Martha's message this week

There was a doctor on the Today Show last week who was discussing the eating disorders of obesity and anorexia in many youth of today.

When asked what parents could do to help their children, Dr. Nancy said one thing in particular that caught my attention.  She said “We have to bring them to the table, to see that we eat together, to talk about the importance of feeding their bodies in a healthy, hopeful, whole manner.”

Being together is an imperative for eating, for well being, for health, for their future.

That is also true of bringing our children, and ourselves, together at another table. The table of the Eucharist, our altar.

It is not good enough to make sure our children’s  physical bodies are  the only thing fed appropriately for their future, for their well-being.  It is also a priority that their souls are fed, and their hearts as well, nourishing them on the Christian hope and faith.  Together with us in prayer and communion.

Eating disorders are terrible situations and must be addressed. Soul disorders are just as horrendous. No matter what your age.

How do we balance the care of our bodies with the care of our souls? How do you feed yourself:  body, mind and spirit? What do we offer our children and youth for nourishment?

Sunday School begins next week!

Education Hour (9:15 a.m., Sundays) resumes September 12.

There is something for everyone!

  • You may bring your infants and toddlers to our paid staff in the Nursery, which is across from the Parlor on the main level.
  • Preschool (3.5 years) through 3rd graders enter the Heart-Land Godly Play room through the door at Room 116 in the education wing.
  • 4th and 5th graders go to Heart-Land Journeys downstairs in the choir room, through the door next to the kitchen.
  • 6th & 7th graders go to the Rite 13 room in the education wing, Room 118.
  • 8th & 9th graders go to the J2A room next door, Room 119.
  • 10-12th graders go to the YAC area downstairs in the Parish Hall.
  • Adults will find their meeting in the Library, on the main level.

If you missed receiving your Christian Formation publication at the kick-off brunch last week, you may pick one up at the main (worship) entrance to the church or phone the office and it can be mailed to you.

Chapel Also Resumes

On September 12, we resume Children’s Chapel at 10:30.

After the Collect of the Day (the day’s gathering prayer), all children (preschool & up) are invited to follow the Chapel Cross to the Heart-Land Godly Play room, where our child-size altar and lectern await them.

We hear and talk about the day’s Gospel lesson in child-friendly language and then have our own Prayers of the People. We return to the nave at the Peace.
