There are also Lenten devotional materials available on the table and in the track racks in the narthex and outside the library. Easter Herb Bread orders are being taken now. This will be your last chance to purchase herb bread until November! There is a sign up in the narthex for orders and to volunteer to butter bread. The 1st Monday Supper will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the parish hall on Monday, March 1. All are invited. The Men of Whatever invite all the men of the parish to join them at 6 p.m. in the parish hall on Tuesday, March 2 for food and fellowship. Church Of The Open Mouth: At Christ Church, we joke about the number of activities we sponsor which involve food. The truth of the matter is, we all like to eat, and more importantly -- we like the fellowship! From Coffee Hour to Octoberfest, the behind-the-scenes work is organized by the Fellowship Commission. If you’re someone who’s not found a place to be involved at church, perhaps you’d consider being part of Fellowship. There will be a (re)organizational meeting of the Fellowship Commission on Tuesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. in the church library. Join us! If you're unable to be at the meeting, but interested in joining the Commission, please contact Libby through the parish office. Giving Empowers My Sisters (GEMS) will meet on Wed., March 3 in the parlor as usual, but we’ll meet at 6 p.m. instead of 5 because Taizé-style worship is scheduled for the parlor at 5:30. How about coming at 5:30 for worship and then stay for fellowship? Food can be placed on the counter or in the oven on your way in. All women are invited to this monthly gathering where we share treats, conversation and take up a collection for a woman in need. St. Siskel’s Guild will meet in the parlor at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 7 (rescheduled from Feb. 21). The movie is Defiance which depicts the true story of four Jewish brother who escaped from Poland into the forests of Belarus during World War II to lead a band of resistance fighters and create a safe haven for Jewish refugees. It is a powerful story and shows different points of view of the Jewish experience. Join us! Women of Excellence: We will eat-in at the church on Wed., March 10, at noon. We’ll enjoy a soup, salad and bread luncheon provided by Melody Rockwell, Jackie Bryant, MaryAnn Wetherbee and Barbara Schlachter. Please sign up in the narthex so the cooks can be ready. We are hoping everyone will come for Eucharist at 11 a.m., and we want to especially invite all women who have turned 60 within the past year who have not been “inducted.” The Dedication of our new Allen Organ will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 14. Dr. Brett Wolgast, who will present the concert, is an organ professor at the University of Iowa and Coe College, and cantor at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. A reception will follow the concert. Please plan to attend. POLISH Day is coming March 27! What is POLISH day? Polish Our Lord’s Inner Space Help us, please! Altar Guild members will clean and polish Sat., March 27 from 9 a.m. to noon. This is a great opportunity for anyone seeking a one day commitment to help at Christ Church. We know that not everyone can make an ongoing commitment to the Altar Guild and this is an opportunity to help for one day only - even if only for an hour. Please consider coming - we need you!

From the Pastor's Study: Martha's message this week
It is Lent. On Ash Wednesday we heard the words “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” And that’s about the one sure thing we are guaranteed in life. We all will die. Our physical bodies will turn to dust or ashes. There’s no getting around that. Fortunate for us Christians, though, as we are reminded of our death, we have before us a season to help us search out what our lives and our living means. Easier said than done. Resistance to Lent lies within each one of us. Resistance to death lies there also. Lent gives us the opportunity to search out ourselves in order to learn more how to live. You have the ability to participate in keeping a holy Lent. It doesn’t have to be made hard or difficult or terribly time consuming. It does take commitment. Lent is a time set aside to practice our faith, to reconnect with our spirituality by living simply, de-cluttering, practicing quieting and gratitude, exploring the meaning, and the way of our living. As a steward in the household of God, we are challenged more and more each day with activities and temptations that take us far from God.
Too often our treasures are counted in material goods these days rather than in our blessings. Matthew 6 tells us that “where our treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Where and what is your treasure? Being stewards in the household of God is intensely counter-cultural in significant ways. We live in a society where we are taught explicitly and implicitly that to be truly human is to be self-sufficient, independent, protective, competitive, acquisitive, accumulative, a consumer. If you pay money, you should get something. There is no limit to the satisfaction of our desires. Our spirit is nourished and our worth is measured by what we possess. Or so we have been duped into thinking and believing.
What are the marks of this counter-culture called the Household of God? We are interdependent and collaborative — we need each other, others need us. We share surplus so each has enough. That is the real definition of biblical justice: we have our daily bread and we share so no one goes without. No one. In order for all to live, each limits accumulation. Money is just another resource to be allocated to ensure shalom. Our spirit is nourished by living up to who God made us to be. Our worth is given, and defined, by God, not things. Christ Church challenges us to order our financial life according to our faith values. As a center of hope and transformation, Christ Church hopes to help you address and make well your personal relationship with material things, money and the weight you and your life carry as a burden because of them. Laura Dunham, in Graceful Living, says this: “Every choice we make to spend, save or give has an impact, creating a ripple effect. How each of us decides to live matters.” “No one can serve two masters….you cannot serve God and material wealth. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Where is your heart? Lent is an appropriate time to rediscover and connect with your real treasure. Will you step up to that challenge?
