Reflection This Week

NO ONE EVER SAID IT WOULD BE EASY

Every time we say the General Confession, we profess our sinfulness. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we give thanks that our sins are already forgiven. It is one thing to know or believe (take your pick) that our sins are forgiven because Jesus died on the cross for our sins or because of God’s unconditional love (again, take your pick); it is altogether something else to do something about those sins.

We are all sinners: no exceptions. That is a given. How great a sinner we might be is important but in many ways it is also irrelevant. A sin is a sin is a sin. There is, to be sure, a difference in degree of our sins and our sinfulness; but that, too, is irrelevant. In the end our sins are forgiven. It is in the meantime that is what is truly important.

In the meantime, in the here-and-now, what is important is not so much that we acknowledge our sinfulness, that we even publicly confess that truth and that fact, nor is it that we give thanks for God’s mercy and love, miserable sinners that we are. That is all well and good, important and necessary. Rather, what is truly important is, first, that we name those sins, and, second, that we actually do something about them. The latter follows the former.

Neither is easy. To acknowledge our sinfulness is easy. No one of us would ever dare to stand in public – and certainly never before our God – and proclaim him- or herself to be sinless. We would be either laughed off the stage, considered a fool or both. Even if we could make such a claim, we would bring about the end of sinless life through the sin of pride.

To name our specific sins, however, takes pride’s remedy, namely humility. Of course we are not asked to publicly name our sins for any and all to hear. Were that a requirement for celebrating the Eucharist, I dare say the church would be empty of both people and priest. While we will all freely admit to our sinfulness to anyone who might ask or even do so unasked, we become mute when it comes to publicly naming those sins.

Why this is so I will leave to the experts in human behavior. Those experts will tell us, however, that it is vital for our spiritual, emotional and even physical well being to name our sins, our specific sins and not simply confess our general sinfulness. Theologians would agree. For if we fail to face up to our particular sins, the very present danger is that those sins will become even worse. By the time we finally admit that we are over weight, we are already thirty or forty pounds over that limit.  So it is with our sins.

This is not to rant and rave, not hellfire and brimstone. It is simply a reminder to all of us, myself especially, that while confessing general sinfulness is good and even necessary, there are times, regular times, when we need, nay, must, take some specific time to examine our conscience and honestly name our sins. Again, that will never be easy. No one ever said it would. Then, and this is of equal importance, we must determine what we must do, what changes in our lives we must make, to reduce the degree of those sins. That will not be easy either; but it will not happen until we specifically name those sins. WJP

Please direct questions to facilitator Charles.

FELLOWSHIP, MEETINGS & EVENTS
Dinner and a Show: Wed, May 21
Do you love to hear our children and youth choirs offer their honest and earnest song? Come to our end-of-year concert at 7 p.m.! It’s also our last Wednesday Supper of the year, serving from 5:15-6:45. The concert’s freewill offering is the children’s opportunity to support the mission in Swaziland. Ice cream social follows!

Calling All Heroes! VBS is June 16-20. Kids (grades K-5) register now for the fun with Veggie Tales and Pirates galore. We’ve got lots of youth & grown-ups lending a hand, with minor jobs still available, contact Lesley or Lisa to join the crew.

The Christ Church Softball Team will play the team from Father’s House Vineyard Church at 6 p.m. on May 12. Come cheer them on –  Diamond #4 at Noelridge Park.

Ladies, mark your calendars! The Men of Whatever will serve dinner to the women of the parish, at 6 p.m. on May 13 Sign up in the narthex or call the parish office.

The Women of Excellence are off to the Riverside Casino for lunch Wed., May 14. Meet at the church at 11:45 a.m. and be sure to sign up in the narthex or by calling the office so we can have the right number of drivers.

GEMS (Giving Empowers My Sisters) invites all women of the parish! We chat, we laugh, we eat and we try to help a woman in need. We’ll gather the evening of Wed., May 14 from 5 – 7 in the parlor. Bring a treat to share (salty, sweet or nutritious) and your own beverage. We have a basket for $20 donations (more or less is welcome). This collection goes to a woman in need.

Supper on May 18: Hello to all folks with younger children, young adults without children, and people “newer” to Christ Church who would like to link up with some good folks. We are doing supper at 5:30 on the 3rd Sunday of the month at the Irish Democrat (1st Ave & 32nd St). Can you join us on May 18? Please let the office know so we save a place at the table for you. Contact Barbara Schlachter for more information.

REACHING OUT
Volunteers Urgently Needed for the A to Z Sale!. Sign up in the narthex
. Sale is May 16, 17 & 18 and many hands are needed. Remember that all proceeds from this semi-annual sale go to community agencies and charities. You can sponsor a sale table for a tax deductible donation of $10. Sponsorship forms are in the narthex; completed forms may be left in the office or put in the offering plate.

Outreach Focus for May: ARC Summer Day Camp: Items needed: 100% fruit juice, disposable cameras, card games (Uno, Rats, Skipbo, etc.), markers & crayons. Place donations in the Outreach basket in the narthex.

Sign up this weekend for Neighborhood Meals & Enrichment Program (NMEP). We serve meals to Johnson and Polk School children every day during the summer.  Christ Church has been involved with a group of ten churches providing volunteers, food, and monetary donations for many years. It is a fun couple of hours and your volunteer help is needed. Sign up sheets will be in the narthex May 10 & 11. Bring your calendar and pick a day to help! Any questions call Mary.

Spring at Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry: What does spring mean at the food pantry? It means more guests. Now that the weather is warmer, people don’t mind waiting for food. In April we’re averageing 100 guests per week. Each person receives 8 items of food per visit. With 5 Tuesdays in the month, it means that we hand out over 4000 items. No wonder our shelves are bare. Please don’t forget that we need your support the year around. God bless you for all you do for the pantry. Val Nuebauer, Director.

Pantry Items: Peanut butter & canned mandarin oranges.
