Summer Reading Camp

Reading camp is a central focus of Jubilee Ministries at Christ Church. We have completed our fourth year with sponsoring a camp at Coe College for students in grades 3 through 5 from Johnson Elementary School. Each year we choose a theme book for all students to read. In 2010 we read two shorter books on civil rights – the stories of Ruby Pane and Rosa Parks. Students are paired up with a mentor who reads and plays with them throughout the week. This year in 2011 our theme book is "Where Birds Live" by Claudia McGehee. The kids have reading problems and some have a need for some one-on-one attention.  They swim in the Coe pool, go on scavenger hunts and eat in the Coe cafeteria. In the afternoons the kids are introduced to science concepts in interactive sessions in biology, chemistry and physics. The classes are taught by Coe faculty and summer research students. We are blessed by this relationship and the generosity of Coe College. The students are chosen by the school staff and this experience gives them the opportunity to see that they too can go to college in the future.

Our second reading camp this year will host children from Kenwood Elementary, Catherine McAuley Center and Christ Church. The same theme book by Claudia McGeHee will be used and each child will receive a copy. Many of the same activities will be provided at Christ Church for this camp including a treasure hunt, reading with mentors, games and lunch.  For more information please contact Leslee Sandberg at 350-3853 or LesleeDS@aol.com.
