May Basket Event

The Anglican Church in Swaziland , a country in southern Africa , began building strong ties with Christ Episcopal Church with a personal visit by three Christ Church members in November 2004.

Recently, the Christ Church Swaziland Companions group considered a request from Fr. Michael Dludlu to support four orphans with school fees. Fees for the four high school students, Velile Mabusela, Hlobsile Mayisela, Khululi Dlamini and Lindokuhle Nxumalo, totaled $1,230. The funds were needed by the end of March, 2005.

Katharine Willey, a youth representative, said the youth of the Christ Church would take on the project themselves, contributing $1,230 from their own funds, wired directly to Swaziland .

To replenish their funds, these young people are planning a Sunday, May 1 silent auction with a variety of May baskets provided by committees, groups and individuals. Set at a bratwurst picnic, the auction also features strolling musicians. Baskets are planned for all ages.

According to Erin B, "This is good for Swaziland , and our youth are excited about getting a lot of groups in our church involved in this. Jack Y agrees. "The Swaziland effort is bringing our church together for a common cause. I feel just like Erin does; if we do this, we will be known as the kids who get involved.

And from Father Michael Dludlu came many thanks and blessings, "May God the Almighty bless the young people who have been inspired to meet the challenges of our youth in our community. I have already met with them and informed them about their education fees being paid. Thank you for being a caring people."
