Elizabeth
Cady Stanton Live Presentation

A
live one-woman presentation enacting Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Her Life and
Times, will be presented by the Rev. Dr. Barbara Schlachter, Associate
Rector of Christ Episcopal Church, 220 40th
St., NE, Cedar Rapids, on Sunday, March 13 at 7 p.m. Stanton has been
called the grand old woman of America. The presentation is in honor of
Women’s History Month, and includes 19th
century piano music played by Betty Debban. A reception follows.
Elizabeth
Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony were in their time the preeminent
advocates of women's rights, especially women's right to vote. Active as a
reformer principally in the United States, Stanton also gained an
international following.
Schlachter
has been refining this presentation since first presenting it for a
state-wide convention last fall. “There are some interesting ties to
Iowa that I have discovered. And I wanted to add them to the program,”
she says.
Stanton
was also an active participant in many of the reform movements of her day,
from temperance and dress reform to antislavery and labor organizing. As a
proponent of women's rights, she protested the exclusion of women from
juries, unequal pay, and laws that gave husbands ownership of their wives
and children. She advocated coeducation, the rights of married women to
their property and wages, women's control of their own bodies, and their
right to divorce.
“Elizabeth
Cady Stanton was one of the 19th century’s most influential women and a
pioneer in the women’s rights movement,” says Schlachter. “Her depth
of spirit and keen insight make her a woman for our own time as well.”
There
is no fee, but a free-will donation for Heart of Iowa will be collected.
